Living in Durant
Durant is the Bryan County seat and Oklahoma's anchor on the Texoma circuit: home to the Choctaw Nation's headquarters, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and a downtown worth an afternoon. About 90 miles from Dallas, it is the hub of the Southern Oklahoma side.

The feel of the place
University, heritage, and lake gateway
Durant was founded by Dixon Durant, whose Choctaw-French family arrived along the Trail of Tears, and the town has grown into the heart of the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma. That heritage shows up everywhere: in institutions, in events, in the workforce, and in a community that carries real pride. The town brands itself the Magnolia Capital of Oklahoma and the Gateway to Lake Texoma.
Southeastern Oklahoma State University gives Durant a lively student pulse, and the historic downtown along Main Street is filling with shops, cafés, and the Magnolia Mile art alley. The Choctaw Casino & Resort adds entertainment and steady jobs, and its Grand Theater draws touring acts to town.
The cost of living runs well below the national average, which makes Durant attractive to families stretching a budget, and the lake is a straight shot north. It is big enough to have real amenities and small enough to keep a hometown feel.
Schools
Full-size schools, a university in town
Durant's public schools serve the town's students through elementary, middle, and high school, and the district supports a complete slate of sports and fine arts. The town is large enough that kids have real options and real teams.
Southeastern Oklahoma State University, enrolling roughly 5,600 students, is the single biggest influence on the local talent pool, which means internships, events, and college-town energy are woven into daily life.
Parks and outdoor life
A straight shot to the lake, plus culture up close
Durant is the launch point for the Oklahoma side of Lake Texoma: marinas, ramps, fishing, and swimming spots are 20 to 30 minutes north, with Kingston and Buncombe Creek the closest communities.
Closer in, Keithley Park and the town's neighborhood parks cover playgrounds and sports, and the Choctaw Cultural Center just outside town is a world-class stop for families wanting to understand the region's deep history.
